Alexander Whiteway, Founder and CEO of Modern Ancients

Most of humanity's greatest opportunities already exist. They remain unrealized because the people, knowledge, resources, and decisions required to activate them remain fragmented across organizations, industries, communities, and geographies.

Modern Ancients exists to solve that problem.

For more than a decade, Alexander has worked at the intersection of systems thinking, entrepreneurship, strategic design, emerging technology, storytelling, organizational development, ecosystem building, and place-based innovation. Through that work, he has become increasingly focused on a challenge larger than any individual company:

How do we help societies see what is possible before the opportunity disappears?

The answer has become Living Place Intelligence — a new institutional category designed to transform conversation into intelligence, intelligence into coordination, and coordination into meaningful action.

Founder Thesis

Founder Thesis

Most founders start with a product. Alexander started with a pattern.

Across startups, cities, nonprofits, corporations, economic development initiatives, community organizations, and innovation ecosystems, the same condition repeatedly emerged:

  • Critical knowledge existed.
  • Capable people existed.
  • Capital existed.
  • The opportunity existed.

Yet meaningful action failed to occur because the system lacked sufficient visibility, alignment, trust, and coordination.

The problem was not a shortage of intelligence.

The problem was the absence of infrastructure capable of converting distributed intelligence into collective action.

That realization became the foundation for Modern Ancients.

Why This Founder

  • Builder of Systems, Not Projects

Alexander has consistently gravitated toward designing systems that continue creating value long after their original creators leave the room. Rather than optimizing for short-term consulting engagements, isolated products, or transactional outcomes, he has spent years developing reusable frameworks, methodologies, operating systems, intelligence models, and organizational architectures.

    • Learn faster
    • Coordinate better
    • Make higher-quality decisions
    • Adapt to uncertainty
    • Discover opportunity earlier
    • Build with greater resilience

This orientation naturally evolved from consulting into institution building.

  • Design Meets Entrepreneurship

Alexander earned his Master's degree in Creative Brand Management from the VCU Brandcenter, one of the nation's leading strategy and innovation programs. While many graduates pursued traditional agency leadership paths, Alexander chose a different route — instead of joining an established institution, he committed to building one.

    • Organizational transformation
    • Human systems
    • Innovation ecosystems
    • Economic development
    • Participatory governance
    • Venture creation
    • Artificial intelligence
    • Community stewardship
    • Regenerative development

The result is a founder capable of operating simultaneously across strategy, culture, technology, narrative, capital, and execution.

  • Operator Under Constraint

Modern Ancients was not built through venture capital. It was built through persistence. Since 2019, Alexander has operated as strategist, researcher, producer, facilitator, designer, business developer, community builder, technologist, and executive producer. Rather than spending capital to solve problems, he developed systems capable of solving problems repeatedly.

The outcome is a substantial body of intellectual property, methodologies, workflows, and institutional knowledge created before significant outside investment has occurred. This operating history demonstrates a core trait investors consistently seek: the ability to create leverage before resources arrive.

  • Ecosystem Intelligence

One of Alexander's distinguishing strengths is his ability to see relationships between seemingly unrelated domains. His work regularly spans entrepreneurs, investors, economic developers, universities, governments, healthcare systems, designers, technologists, philanthropists, community leaders, creatives, and industry operators.

This cross-sector perspective allows him to identify opportunities that do not appear within the boundaries of any single industry. Rather than specializing in one market, he specializes in understanding the conditions through which markets emerge.

Origin story

From Creating Evolving Organizations to Stradaogist

How a Podcast Became a Practice

The original name was simple.

Creating Evolving Organizations (CEO) emerged from a question that had been quietly guiding my work for years:

What does it take to build organizations capable of evolving alongside the complexity of the world they inhabit?

At the time, I believed the answer was primarily organizational.

I was studying entrepreneurship, innovation, systems thinking, design strategy, organizational development, and the emerging implications of artificial intelligence. Through conversations with founders, executives, civic leaders, technologists, artists, investors, and community builders, a pattern began to emerge.

Organizations do not evolve because plans are written.

Organizations evolve because people evolve.

And people evolve because of the environments they inhabit, the relationships they maintain, the stories they tell themselves, and the reference groups through which they make sense of reality.

The podcast became an exploration of that phenomenon.

Each conversation was less about extracting expertise and more about observing transformation in motion.

Over time, I realized something unexpected.

The most important thing being created was not the organization.

It was the strategist.

The Hidden Influence of Reference Groups

One of the most profound discoveries came through observing the effects of reference groups on my own decision-making.

Entrepreneurs often imagine themselves as independent actors.

In reality, we are deeply shaped by the people around us.

Every conversation influences perception.

Every relationship influences optionality.

Every community establishes a set of visible and invisible norms that affect what appears possible, desirable, or worth pursuing.

As I expanded my own network across founders, investors, civic leaders, creatives, researchers, and technologists, I began noticing how my thinking changed simply through proximity.

Questions became larger.

Time horizons expanded.

Opportunities became more visible.

Risk became easier to evaluate.

Conviction became easier to build.

What I was experiencing was not merely networking.

It was strategic emergence.

The reference group itself was functioning as a distributed intelligence system.

No individual possessed the complete answer.

Yet collectively, patterns emerged that no single participant could have produced alone.

The Decentralized Strategist

This realization challenged one of the dominant myths of leadership.

The myth is that strategy originates from a central authority.

The reality is that strategy often emerges from interactions between many autonomous actors navigating shared uncertainty.

In this sense, every entrepreneurial ecosystem behaves like a decentralized autonomous organization.

Not necessarily in a blockchain sense.

But in a social sense.

Decision-making becomes distributed.

Intelligence becomes collective.

Authority becomes situational.

Value emerges through relationships rather than hierarchy.

The role of the strategist shifts accordingly.

Rather than controlling outcomes, the strategist becomes responsible for sensing patterns, facilitating alignment, increasing observability, and helping groups discern pathways forward.

The strategist becomes less of a commander and more of a steward of emergence.

Why Stradaogist

The transition to Stradaogist reflected this realization.

The name combines two ideas.

Strada — the road, the path, the journey.

Strategist — one who helps navigate uncertainty toward meaningful outcomes.

Together they form a concept larger than either word alone.

A Stradaogist is not merely someone who develops plans.

A Stradaogist studies pathways.

They observe how individuals, organizations, communities, and ecosystems move through uncertainty.

They examine how decisions compound over time.

They recognize that futures are rarely engineered directly; they are navigated.

Where Creating Evolving Organizations focused primarily on the evolution of institutions, Stradaogist expanded the lens to include the evolution of the people, relationships, and ecosystems from which institutions emerge.

A Field for Creating Evolving Organizations

The subtitle remained intentionally connected to the original vision.

Stradaogist: A Field for Creating Evolving Organizations

The field metaphor matters.

A field is not a hierarchy.

It is not a company.

It is not a singular methodology.

A field is an environment in which interactions occur.

An ecology.

A landscape of relationships.

A place where signals become patterns, patterns become insights, insights become opportunities, and opportunities become action.

The podcast evolved from documenting organizations to documenting the conditions through which organizations become capable of evolving.

It became an exploration of how people navigate complexity together.

How intelligence emerges through conversation.

How strategy emerges through relationships.

How communities become engines of possibility.

And ultimately, how the future is created not by isolated individuals, but by networks of people learning to see more clearly together.

The Ongoing Experiment

Today, I no longer view the work primarily as media production.

Nor solely as consulting.

Nor exclusively as venture creation.

I view it as the ongoing cultivation of a living reference group.

A distributed network of observers, practitioners, builders, investors, creators, and stewards helping one another navigate increasingly complex futures.

The podcast was the beginning.

Creating Evolving Organizations described the destination.

Stradaogist describes the journey.

The most valuable organizations are often created by communities that learn how to evolve together long before the organization itself ever exists.

Institutional arc

The Evolution of Modern Ancients

  1. Phase One

    Journey Consulting

The original focus was helping leaders navigate complexity, transitions, growth, and organizational evolution. Through this work, recurring patterns emerged across hundreds of conversations and engagements.

  2. Phase Two

    Intelligence Development

Those patterns evolved into structured methodologies, including CORE FLOW, Leadership Alignment, Transition Alignment, Opportunity Architecture, Venture Design Frameworks, and Ecosystem Mapping Systems. The objective shifted from delivering advice to creating reusable intelligence.

  3. Phase Three

    Community Infrastructure

As the work expanded, new initiatives emerged — Creating Evolving Organizations, AI Ready RVA, Building Cities with Character, Think Tank for Emergent Ideas, and Venture Alliance. These initiatives transformed Modern Ancients from a consulting practice into a platform for collective learning.

  4. Phase Four

    Institutional Infrastructure

Today, the focus is the development of Living Place Intelligence — an integrated system that combines forums, research, intelligence, community, capital, venture formation, marketplace infrastructure, and decision support systems into a unified architecture for collective action.

Current build

What Is Being Built Now

The current phase integrates years of experimentation into a single institutional platform.

  • Stradaogist

    The conversation and convening layer.

  • Critical Insights

    The research and intelligence layer.

  • Character Developer

The decision-support and opportunity intelligence layer.

  • Nanopelagos

The venture formation and incubation layer.

  • Venture Alliance

    The deployment and execution network.

  • Modern Ancients

The institutional steward coordinating the entire system.

Together, these components form Living Place Intelligence: an operating system for helping communities, organizations, founders, investors, and institutions discover opportunities earlier, coordinate more effectively, and act with greater confidence.

Timing

Why Now

Three forces are converging simultaneously:

  1. 1.Artificial intelligence is dramatically reducing the cost of intelligence production.
  2. 2.Communities and institutions are facing increasing complexity and uncertainty.
  3. 3.Traditional organizational structures struggle to coordinate across sectors and scales.

The result is a growing need for infrastructure that helps people make sense of complexity together. Living Place Intelligence is designed to meet that need.

Participation case

Why participate

Stradaogist is live infrastructure for calibrated participation — not a pitch deck waiting for capital to begin.

Funding at any depth compounds:

  • Observable institutional truth for serious observers
  • Intelligence access and convening participation
  • Relationship capital across the Venture Alliance
  • Transparent marketplace outcomes you can track
  • Depth that unlocks as your participation grows

The reference institution is already instrumented. Your participation deepens what you can see, fund, and shape — timed to organizational reality, not campaign narrative.

The future rarely arrives because we lack ideas. More often, it fails to arrive because we lack the capacity to recognize, coordinate, and act on what is already emerging. Modern Ancients exists to build that capacity.
